There are few places have so many UNESCO World Heritage Sites (eight) packaged in such a small area. Sri Lankan 2000-year-old cultures can be discovered in old places where legendary temples boast beautiful details, even when hidden in caves or perch on prominent peaks. More recent are evocative colonial forts, from Galle to Trincomalee. Over the island, that thing that goes blow at night might be an elephant heading for a favorite waterhole. It’s so simple
The distances are short: see the sacred home of the oldest living tree in the world that is in the world in the morning (Anuradhapura), and become amazed by the sight of hundreds of elephants serving in the afternoon (Minneriya). Identify a favourite beach, meditate in a 2,000-year-old temple, exchange laughs and ramble around the merry village, admire the birds and flowers, keep the number of small plates coming with rice and curry. Walk around the provincial gems in Colombo, then hit some epic surf. Sri Lanka is sensational, affordable and still often uncrowded. Now is the best time to discover it.

When you are ready to leave the tropical climate of the coast and the lowlands, head to the hills with their mild, greenish beauty. Tea plantation, lush rainforests, resemble walkers, tourists and those who want to see them from the thrilling train ride. Bright white and often fresh, circling on the island, no matter where you go, you’ll be close to a gem. If you defeat the inevitable weakness, you can surf and dive in world-class places without world-class crowds. And you are always just a short jump from something completely new.
